As I lay there, the first cold wind of autumn started to blow and I knew I would not see the truck again that year, and that summer was over. From down the street, I heard the sound of the ice cream truck with its haunting little song. When I was still living in Berkeley, in my early 20s, I remember sitting in the back yard of the little house I bought after my parents died. I believe the song to be about irrevocable change, the loss of innocence, and the melancholy associated with not being able to go home again. It seems that it is a time travel tune because it conjures up images as far back as when I was 12. “‘Suddenly Last Summer’ woke me up at 3 a.m. What happened so suddenly last summer? According to lead singer, Martha Davis, the song is pretty deep and definitely based off of her memories. The clematis is blooming right now and I am in love with my mailbox. lol… daffodils, daylilies, iris, succulents, tiger lilies, and clematis. It’s got a little bit of everything shoved in there. I love all my flowerbeds, but my favorite is a tiny spot surrounding my mailbox. I just took a piece and made it look like it was never there to begin with. I even have flowers from my son’s elementary school flowerbeds. I dug up daffodils, flags (it’s a flower, but I only know it by that name), succulents, iris, hibiscus, and lilies. When their home was sold, I actually put it in the rider that not all flowers would remain (my brother was pretty annoyed by this, but he still let me do it). I have a ton of flowers from my mom and dad’s yard in Flushing. Double daylilies from Grandpop’s yard in Philadelphia. I have flowers from friends’ and family’s yards. I try to gear my flowers so that something is blooming at all times, but it’s more than that. I can’t wait to have some color in the Spring. This will assure the longevity of the structure. It sounds crazy, but here we are. In most scenarios, we completely rebuild and pour a new concrete footing. The only solution we have to offer is to install a cast stone cap and perform the restoration. If they do not have a concrete footing or cast stone cap the structure will be prone to weather and will start to deteriorate. Mainly the brick or stone caps are the first to be restored due to weathering. No matter the problem we can fix it.Ĭolumns like the mailboxes will have the same issues. NOTE: There is a USPS code and guidelines on the placement of your mailbox and kit IssuesĪ few problems that can happen is the material used such as brick, stone or cast stone can come loose, break or see signs of spalling. Over time it could lean, sink or fall over. There are a number of cast stone, brick or natural stone cap designs to choose from. We can rebuild just the top half or install a new cap giving it a whole new look. There are flat, peak and crescent shaped caps. A cast stone cap is not crucial but it will help slow the deterioration of the structure if not completely. Installing a cap can really top off the looks of a masonry mailbox. Choose to install an address block, separate numbered individual blocks or a numbered sign for helpful directions to your location. Roadside and security mailbox kits can be installed with all brick, block or stone. The important item on the mailbox is the kit. Choose to use thin brick or thin stone for even more choices. When it comes to a masonry mailbox we have built many out of stone, brick & stucco or a mixed combination of material.
